A south Kolkata gallery aims at creating a platform exclusively for sculptors

It’s strange how cold metal for ages has lent itself to intricate emotions. The interaction between metal and feelings, this time, had brought alive the relationship between the mother and the child. The Sculpture Gallery in Jadavpur organised an exhibition of sculpture on bronze that emphasized the nuances of maternal instincts. “There’s so much destruction around that we thought of talking about sustenance. And the mother-child relationship is the best prototype of sustenance,” says Tapas Sarkar, who owns Sculpture Gallery. Fourteen artists worked on bronze to give shape to pieces that define the most precious relationship on the earth.

Eighty-two year old Shanu Lahiri also forayed into bronze sculpture for the first time according to Sarkar. “Her grit and determination is amazing. Working on bronze is very tedious. And her age,the kind of enterprise she showed is amazing,” says Sarkar. Apart from Sarkar and Lahiri, names likes Shankar Ghosh and Partha Pratim Deb featured in the exhibition.

The Sculpture Gallery, which Sarkar claims is the only gallery in India that deals exclusively in sculpture had been built to act as an interface between sculptors and the masses. “Somehow, sculpture is very distanced from the masses. With this exhibition we tried to break the ice between them,” says Sarkar.
