Playing a mother is not easy, says Lata Saberwal

When Lata Saberwal was offered the role of Rajshri, the eldest bahu of a traditional household, she was a bit hesitant. “Especially when they told me I’d also be playing a 40-something old mother to the Akshara in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,” says Lata. But the minute she finished reading the concept and script,Lata signed up for the part. “Because she was more than a mother…she is the one who shoulders a lot of responsibility, keeps the family it together and in a way represents the young mother of today,” Lata confesses that it’s not easy to conceal with make-up. “I am young, and I look young, and I was worried that once I sign this,I’ll be typecast in all bahu and mother roles…but honestly,I’m enjoying it,” and she has for this January, she tied the knot with her co-star and on screen husband,Sanjeev Seth. “I didn’t even know how it happened! We came close in mid December and after 20 days of courtship,we got married!” laughs Lata, adding how the serial is also about falling in love after marriage. “Guess I’ve enjoyed the both and are discovering each other after marriage,” she’s in fact just wrapped up with Ghar Ek Sapna and is focusing on Yeh Rishta on Star Plus. “Rajshri is an affectionate person, but at the same time strict and hyper. And as a mother, she passes on quite some wisdom to Akshara,” Lata’s back on the sets. Watch Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata hai,Monday to Friday,9:30pm,Star Plus.
