Foldable iPhone/iPad hits another delay: Could it be cancelled like Apple Car?

Apple's foldable plans have been pushed back again, with a launch now rumored for early 2027 instead of late 2026.

Rivals like Samsung have already released multiple generations of foldable phones but Apple has stayed tight-lipped, aside from a few patent filings that hint at their ambitions. And now, it seems we’ll have to wait even longer for Apple’s take on the foldable form factor.

According to a recent report from Korean outlet AlphaBiz, Apple has once again delayed their foldable device, pushing it from a planned Q4 2026 launch to Q1 2027. Apparently, an unnamed “senior official” at Apple let that little detail slip. The reported reason is good old Apple perfectionism – the company is still struggling to solve the crease issue that plagues current foldable displays.

Let’s be real, though – these sorts of delays are par for the course when it comes to Apple foldable rumors. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about setbacks and shifting timelines. Back in 2021, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a foldable iPad would arrive in 2023, a forecast that sounds completely out of line now.

The details around Apple’s foldable remain a big mystery. Will it be a clamshell-like the Galaxy Z Flip, or a book-style design akin to the Z Fold? A foldable iPhone that unfurls into an iPad Mini? Reports are ambiguous.

Take all these rumors with a grain of salt though. Supply chain whispers have proven unreliable before when it comes to bleeding-edge Apple products. The company scrapped its Apple Car dreams altogether.

If Apple’s engineers can’t find a way to eliminate creasing and deliver a truly crease-free folding experience, this could be another ambitious project that never sees the light of day. Still, the new report claims Apple has shuffled some Vision Pro headset engineers over to the foldable team to help get things on track.
