Arunachal hostel fire: PM relief for injured,kin of dead

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to families of students who were killed and Rs 1 lakh each to those seriously injured in a fire in a private hostel in Palin,Arunachal Pradesh,last week. The amount from the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund would be given to family members of 14 students who were charred and to 10 who were seriously injured in the fire,PMO sources said. The students of Holy Angel Don Bosco School,including some girls,were killed after a fire swept through the hostel made of bamboo,late on Wednesday night.

Zee Turner office attacked in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The office of Zee Turner Ltd,a joint venture between Turner International and Essel group,was attacked here,the police said on Saturday. We have registered a case of rioting and trespassing against six unidentified persons for damaging and attacking the office of Zee Turner at Vakola in suburban Mumbai, a senior police official said. The six gathered in a group outside Zee Turners office in Vakola on Friday night and attacked the office,causing minor damage to property, the official said. Meanwhile,Zee Turner,in a statement,said there was an ongoing dispute between them and Hathway Cables over payment defaults.

Kannada film director attempts to end life

BANGALORE: Renowned Kannada film director and producer Sai Prakash allegedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming sleeping tablets on Saturday. Sai Prakash,known for producing films with sentimental themes,was rushed to a private hospital by his son and is out of danger,hospital sources said. Prakash had been in financial trouble after one of his films failed at the box office,sources close to him said. Popular hero Shivarajkumar,Karnataka Film Chambers President Jayamala and several others from the Kannada film industry visited the hospital to enquire about his health.

Kerala actor alleges threat call from Gulf

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran Malayalam actor Thilakan has lodged a complaint with the police claiming he received a death threat for his recent outbursts against the industrys superstars. In a complaint filed with the Alappuzha police on Friday,Thilakan said he received a call from the Gulf stating that a gang had been engaged to finish him off within a week if he did not stop his utterances against the superstars. Thilakan said the call came when he was having dinner at a hotel in Alappuzha at around 10 pm. Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes has given a show-cause notice to Thilakan and warned of disciplinary action if his reply was not satisfactory.

CBI raid on senior Cantt Board officers

KANPUR: The CBI has raided the office and residences of some Cantonment Board officers here in connection with a disproportionate assets case. A team of CBI sleuths from Lucknow came here on Friday night and conducted the searches at the premises of Chief Executive Officer Navendra Nath,Assistant Engineer Kuber Singh and Engineer A C Porwal. Some jewellery,cash and documents were recovered.

Bengal: Teen injured in crude bomb blast

KRISHNANAGAR: A bystander was injured when a crude bomb went off outside a primary school building at Chapra in Nadia district of West Bengal on Saturday. The police said the bomb,kept in the outer wall of Bilatpara Primary School,went off injuring the 17-year old boy. He was rushed to the Shaktinagar Hospital.
