After having been in dilemma over the implementation of delimitation process, the Congress-led UPA Government seems to be ready to bite the delimitation bullet as the Union Cabinet is likely to consider a proposal to notify the delimitation process.

The matter comes up for consideration only few weeks after the Cabinet last month had decided to defer the delimitation exercise in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Jharkhand through an ordinance amending the Delimitation Act 2002, though it had also left the decision regarding operationalisation of the delimitation process in remaining states.

With Assembly elections slated in nine states this year, the proposal holds significance, as the implementation of delimitation process would mean elections in these states will take place as per the redrawn constituencies.

Although three BJP-ruled states— Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh— are also slated for Assembly elections this year, the BJP has been arguing for the implementation of the notification but the Congress has been divided over the implementation considering the Karnataka Assembly elections are also scheduled this year. In this regard, the Cabinet on Thursday is also likely to consider the speech of President Pratibha Patil during the joint session of Parliament.
