Talking Tactics

Bopara hits right length.

The Chepauk wicket for the England-West Indies game wasnt the greatest to bat on,but enlivened the game as a spectacle,by allowing a variety of bowlers to flourish.

Variable bounce was a constant factor. Ian Bell was bowled to a ball that kept a little low; Ramnaresh Sarwan was caught at short leg to one that bounced more than expected. But generally,it wasnt inconsistent bounce the ball tended to sit low when the medium pacers bowled cross-seam,while spinners who tossed it up with a bit of top-spin got the ball to jump.

In these conditions,Ravi Boparas military medium became a valuable asset for England. He tended to pitch the ball fairly short of a good length. This length would have been taken for plenty on a wicket like the one in Bangalore, but it was ideal here Hawkeye showed that even balls that he landed 8m from the crease were hitting the stumps.

As it happened, this low-ish bounce, coupled with his inward deviation, brought him two vital wickets.

Both balls were pitched on virtually the same spot 8m from the crease,a foot outside off stump. Darren Sammy went back to hoick him over midwicket,Devon Thomas tried to run him down to third man,and both of them inside-edged on to their stumps.
