
MUMBAI, JUNE 2: Waking up to allegations of malpractices in the Maharashtra Medical Council MMC elections, the state government has decided to appoint a chief observer to preside over the elections.
According to Thomas Benjamin, Medical Education and Drugs Department secretary, the Director of Medical Education and Research V L Deshpande will be the chief observer.
Further, nodal deans will be appointed as observers, according to Benjamin, 8220;who will keep watch over the elections.8221; The dean of the Government Medical College at Aurangabad will be the observer for the Marathwada region, the dean of the medical college at Nagpur will be the observer for Pune and Western Maharashtra, and the dean of Grant Medical College at Byculla will be the observer for Mumbai and Konkan region.
The chief observer will be present at the counting, which is scheduled for June 26. Declaration of results will also take place on the same date. Ballot papers for the elections are being dispatched now.
According toBenjamin, the MMC registrar has written to the police and the DGO postal services, asking them to ensure that the postal ballots reach the correct person and is returned to the MMC.
A petition had been filed in the Bombay High Court by a group of doctors alleging malpractices in the MMC elections, which among other things, had asked for the appointment of nuetral observers to ensure free and fair polls. The government decision to appoint observers was not related to the petition, Benjamin claimed, adding that it was only a precautionary measure.
