
MUMBAI, Oct 7: The administrative office and referees changing room of the Mumbai District Football Association MDFA was demolished today afternoon by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC.
According to Baban Gaikwad, who oversees the Senior Division league as well as the maintenance of the St Xavier8217;s Ground, Parel, venue of MDFA matches and one of the oldest playing venues in the city, the municipal authorities of South F Ward acted without sending any notice of their intentions.
Gaikwad also informed that BMC officials have threatened to domolish his house adjacent to the venue. The humble dwelling has been Gaikwad8217;s family home since 1936.
The godowns used for keeping material for ground-marking, maintenance and equipment for football and athletics along with the referee8217;s changing room have also been levelled.
When contacted, Nitu Mandke, MDFA president, said, 8220;It is an improper step and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has called upon the corporator Digamber Kandarkar to settle the issue.Former secretary of the Maharashtra Olympic Association, YA Gole, condemned BMC8217;s action.
Talking to The Indian Express, Kehar Singh, honorary general secretary of the MDFA said that the ground has been given on lease by the State Government to the association to conduct sporting activities and Thackeray has assured him of every assurance of preventing further damage.
