Karthikeyan finishes fifth
MUMBAI: Narain Karthikeyan, displayed grit and determination when he finished a creditable fifth in the British Formula Three championship at Silverstone in London. Takuma Sato of Japan, Italians Antonio Pizzonia and Bruni and Englishman Tomas Scheckter finished ahead of the Indian.
The first 15 of the 24 laps saw the Indian, racing in a Dallara F 300, and the other top five drivers weaving around the entire length and breadth of the 3.6 km track to gain advantage, as per the information received here on Monday. Karthikeyan, who fought till the very end of the race even after being tipped from behind by Italian driver Gianmaria Bruni in the 16th lap, managed to claim the fifth position out of a strong field of 24 cars and increase his championship tally to 77 to remain fourth in the championship.

NEW DELHI: India bagged five silver and three bronze medals in the Millennium Asian Powerlifting Championship which concluded in the Philippines on Monday.
The Indian squad earned the overall third position in the team championship in the four-day event which commenced on August 18.
Shika bows out
VIJAYAWADA: Delhi girl Shika Sharma, who shocked third seed Ahana Paul of Bengal in the morning, bowed out of the cadet girls singles on the second day of the National Ranking Table Tennis championship (South zone) here on Monday. The sixth seed lost to Sukanya Bose of Bengal 18-21, 17-21 in the semi-finals while fifth seed AV Nivedita of Tamil Nadu shocked top seed Nabanita Bose of Bengal 17-21, 22-20, 21-18 in a hard fought match.

Vasco enter final
MARGAO: Vasco SC downed Salgaocar 2-1 to enter the final of the Governor’s Cup at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday. Salgaocar’s Climax Lawrence scored in the 69th but Vasco came back through Caetano Pinho (78th) Kishore Palkar (82nd).
