Chetak Football Club (CFC) and Sangam Football Club (SFC) entered the senior division finals of the Guru Teg Bahadur Football Tournament in two rather unusually similar semifinal encounters on Saturday.
Chetak took on Indrayani FC in the first semifinal. Manvendra Mishra and Aniket Wagle of Chetak produced some brilliant runs along the right flank, but could not capitalise on their combination to produce a goal. The goal ironically came from their opponents,as Indrayani defender Kavish Bakshi turned the ball into his own net in the 15th minute.
Indrayani spent the rest of the match trying to recover from this setback, but in spite of an excellent performance from their centre-half Allan Anthony and left-winger Manoj Balkrishnan, were unable to pierce the Chetak back line, and Bakshis self-goal was enough to see Chetak through,as they wrapped up a 1-0 victory.
Pune FC,who were favoured to win their semifinal against Sangam FC,suffered a similar setback right at the start of their match,as their defender Samuel Torne deflected the ball past goalkeeper Shahbaz Khan only four minutes after kick-off.
PFC,too, were unable to recover from the own-goal,as the Sangam FC defensive line led by Kiran Sawant did not allow anything to get through. Khan pulled off some excellent saves in the Pune FC goal to ensure that the margin of victory for Sangam was no greater than 1-0.
In the junior semifinal,Kings XI Football club edged out Sanghvi Football Club 3-1 in a tiebreaker, after regulation time ended goalless. Suraj Kshirsagar missed his first penalty for Kings XI,but so did Sagar Tamhe of Sanghvi FC. Akash Chavan and Nikhil Mayane also missed their respective spot-kicks to leave the match goalless after the first four penalties.
Percy Monteiro,Leroy Chahal and Remmedious Pillay converted three on the trot for Kings, and goalkeeper Richard Pillay palmed away Sanghvi FC player Anup Punikars penalty to send his team to the finals. Kings XI takes on Deccan B in the junior division finals. Deccan beat Blue Stag 2-0 in their semifinal on Friday, and todays match promises some exciting football.
