Former President of India and veteran sceintist Dr A P J Abdul Kalam would be conferred with an honourary PhD degree by city- based Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) a DRDO laboratory. The event will take place on March 18,the fifth convocation ceremony of DIAT at the institute’s campus in Girinagar at Khadakwasla. Professor Lalit M Patnaik,vice chancellor,DIAT confirmed that Dr Kalam has consented to receive the PhD degree.
More than honouring him,it is a matter of pride for our institute that scientist of such a great stature is being given a degree by us. He has been kind to accept the degree that we offered to him, said Patnaik. Dr Kalam,who has contributed to the field of defence research is known as the Missile Man of India for his immense contribution to the field of missile technology and the honourary degree aims at acknowledging Dr Kalam’s contribution to the field of Missile technology- Patnaik added.
This is the first time that DIAT,a deemed university has been offering an honourary PhD to any personality and Patnaik further added,This has been in discussion stage for about two- three months now. The idea was initiated by the chairman of the Governing Council of this institute. A number of universities in the world offer PhDs and honourary degrees to various personalities from varied fields such as sports,literature,music and so on. On similar lines,when we thought of coming up with such a PhD,the name that came up was that of Dr Kalam. We are a defence establishment and this degree has be conferred upon him for his outstanding contribution to the field of Defence Technology. The degree would also be formally approved an ratified by the academic council Patnaik said.
The event would be followed by Kalam addressing the students attending the function. He would also be presented medals to the best graduates of the present batch of DIAT. This is the first time,but one cannot assure whether it would be an ongoing process, he said.
