1 dead, 2 injured in wall collapses at under-construction buildings in Mumbai

A construction worker died at an under-construction site in Andheri East, while two women were seriously injured in Bandra East in separate wall collapse incidents.

A 28-year-old man died after getting trapped beneath a mound of soil after a wall collapsed at an under-construction site in Andheri East in Mumbai late Monday night. According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the deceased was identified as Sonelal Prasad, a labourer working at a construction site at Kadamwadi, behind Sai Leela Business Park.

“One of the under-construction walls in the building collapsed on the worker, creating a pit that buried him underneath it, making it difficult for him to come out since the debris largely comprised loose soil. We pulled the worker out and took him to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival,” said an MFB official.

Meanwhile, two women sustained serious injuries after a portion of an under-construction house collapsed on an adjacent hutment at Indira Krupa Housing Society in Bandra East Tuesday morning. According to the civic officials, the two injured have been identified as Komal Yewle, 25, and Pranita Yewle, 28. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital. Komal is in a critical condition while Pranita is stable, said officials.

“A concrete slab collapsed on a hutment that was located just outside the under-construction building. The two injured were present inside the hutment when the incident took place and sustained serious injuries,” an MFB official said.

In another incident on Monday, two people were injured after a portion of a house collapsed in Jogeshwari East.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s data showed eight house collapse incidents in Mumbai in the last 24 hours. It also recorded 36 incidents of tree collapse in the last 24 hours. According to the civic body’s data,22 of these were reported in the western suburbs, eight in the eastern suburbs, and six in the island city.
