Polling in by-elections held for two Assembly constituencies — Lakhimpur and Nidhauli Kalan — on Saturday recorded a voter turnout of 45.3 and 45.4 per cent respectively.

In comparison to General Assembly elections held in 2007,the turnout this time witnessed an increase of 4.7 per cent in Lakhimpur while a fall of 3.4 per cent was reported in Nidhauli Kalan.

In the previous elections,40.6 per cent voters had exercised their franchise in Lakhimpur and 48.8 per cent voters had cast their vote in Nidhauli Kalan.

“Polling in these two constituencies remained peaceful and no complaint of any irregularity, violence or any other problem was reported. All the required steps were taken to ensure fair and peaceful elections,” said Umesh Sinha,Chief Electoral Officer,Uttar Pradesh.

Officials said the fate of 15 candidates including a woman in Lakhimpur and 7 contestants in Nidhauli Kalan was sealed in 583 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Counting is scheduled to begin at 8 am on November 23. In 2007 elections,14 candidates were in fray in each of these two constituencies. The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has not fielded any candidate in the by-elections for both the seats.

Both the seats had fallen vacant due to the deaths of sitting Samajwadi Party MLAs ¿ Anil Kumar Singh in Nidhauli Kalan and Kaushal Kishore in Lakhimpur.
