With the arrest of 18-year-old Gaurav Singh, the Kanpur police claimed to have solved the Barra triple murder case on Friday.

According to the police,Gaurav has confessed that he murdered his father Raj Bahadur Singh (40),stepmother Bedal (35) and stepbrother Anuj (10) at the Fatehpur Gohi village on Wednesday night. While the Barra police have recovered the axe used for the murder, the rifle used in the crime was found at Raj Bahadur’s residence on Thursday morning. Gaurav has been booked on charges of murder and taken to the Kanpur District Jail.

A Class XII student of Rajaram Seva Shiksha Sansthan,Gaurav was presented before the media at Police Lines on Friday afternoon. “On the behest of Bedal,I was frequently thrashed by my father, and it was their rude behaviour which prompted me to murder them,” said Gaurav, who used to spend his maximum time at his aunt’s residence at the Govind Nagar area. On Wednesday,he had come to Fatehpur Gohi village to meet his father.

According to Gaurav,he had asked Bedal to serve him dinner on Wednesday night. “Rather than serving dinner, she scolded me and told me to leave the house at the earliest,” he said. At that time,Singh was out on work.

“I wanted to murder her but it was not possible till the time Anuj was present in the house,” he said. Gaurav asked Anuj to get him a medicine for headache. “After Anuj left for the medical shop,I attacked Bedal and struck a blow in her neck with an axe,” said Gaurav. When Anuj returned,Gaurav struck him in the head with a piece of wood, and thereafter struck a blow in his neck with the axe.

“Though I did not want to murder my father, but he would have killed me if I had spared him,” he added. When Raj Bahadur returned,Gaurav shot him in the chest with his father’s licensed rifle. “I did not run away because I thought that it would be easier for me to concoct a fake story to mislead the police,” said Gaurav. In 1991,Singh had married to Suman, and the couple had three children Gaurav,Saurabh and Sonam. After the death of their mother in 1995,the three children left Raj Bahadur’s residence and started staying with their aunt Ram Dulari. Thereafter,Raj Bahadur’s married Bedal in 1997 and the couple had a 10-year son Anuj.

Addressing mediapersons,Kanpur West ASP D K Choudhary said: “Initial investigations had indicated that the murders were committed due to some old disputes.”
