A day after two youths died in police custody in Allahabad,the state government on Tuesday ordered a CB-CID probe into the incident.
Secretary (Home) Mahesh Gupta announced this in Lucknow. The government issued the order on the recommendation of the Allahabad Inspector General Chandra Prakash.
The police have already initiated legal action against nine policemen Station Officer Vinod Dubey,one Sub-Inspector and seven constables accused of torturing the youths.
Earlier in the day,the postmortem report of the two youths revealed external and internal injuries on the body.
The postmortem report also indicated bleeding in certain parts besides showing alcohol content, said Chief Medical Officer P K Bhaduria. The viscera have been preserved for further tests,the CMO added.
A panel of three doctors conducted the postmortem on Monday night.
The two youth Sanjay Nishad (22) and Ashok Nishad (30) were detained by police on Sunday night from the trans-Yamuna area along with two others,Mukesh Nishad (32) and Devanand Goswami (27),from a beer shop near Gaohania. The police claimed that the youths were looting the beer shop when a police team reached there. According to the police,the youths opened fire and injured Constable Kamlesh Pandey. The police later overpowered them and brought them to Ghoopur police station where they tied them to poles and allegedly beat them with rifle butts and sticks the entire night.
While Mukesh and Devanand fell unconscious,Sanjay and Ashok allegedly died in police custody. Mukesh and Devanand were produced in court on Tuesday in connection with the firing incident and were sent to Naini jail.
Satisfactory actions,including suspension and lodging of an FIR,have been initiated against the policemen. Further action will depend on the inquiry report, said IG Prakash.
Sensing the charged atmosphere in the Naini area,the bodies of the two youths were hurriedly cremated under police protection on Monday night at Naini ghat.
The All India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha has demanded a judicial inquiry into the custodial deaths. The outfit termed the police action against the youths as inhuman and barbaric.
