A portion of the Janak Setu bridge,on road connecting Tihar with Delhi Cantonment,sagged by five to seven inches on Monday. Engineers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),who noticed the sagging,approached the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI,Roorkee) to conduct technical feasibility for restoration.
At the time of sagging,the MCD was in the process of making plans to restore the bridge,which is three decades old. Meanwhile,the traffic on the side of the bridge where sagging has taken occurred,has been closed for vehicles.
The Janak Setu was constructed in 1981-82 as part of Asian Games projects.
Constructed about three decades back,the MCD observed that it required repair,officials said. Therefore,the MCD developed a Rehabilitation Plan for the bridge to restore it to its original strength and load bearing capacity. The plan involving an expenditure of Rs 7 crore covering different aspects of rehabilitation is on the anvil.
We are already on the job for restoration of the sagging and hope that the newly developed fault will be rectified at the earliest without causing any inconvenience to public, said a release from by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
