After an anxious wait and spending 170 days in prison, former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore was released from Burail jail on Friday evening. The former police officer was received by his wife,Abha Rathore, after his release.
The 68-year-old Rathore, however, refused to speak to the mediapersons present outside the high security prison since morning. Rathore was seen sporting a white shirt and black trouser and was escorted out amid high security. A posse of policemen whisked him away to a car where his wife was waiting.
Mediapersons then followed him to his Panchkula residence.
Jail sources said Rathore waited anxiously for news of his release since morning. It was at 5.45 pm that the court orders finally reached the Burail jail; and Rathore walked free at 6.25 pm.
According to jail sources, before leaving his cell at barrack number 10,Rathore thanked fellow inmate Baba Pritpal Singh, whose yoga sessions and laughter classes helped him live through his prison term. He did not meet any other inmate and then proceeded to meet IG Prisons Sunil Bhatia before he walked out amid tight security. Earlier in the day,Abha completed the legal formalities and furnished a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate J S Sidhu. Abha had come to the court around 12.30 pm,but could furnish bail bonds only around 4 pm,due to which it was only in the evening that Rathore was released.
As per the orders of the Supreme Court,Rathore will not leave the country without prior permission of the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chandigarh.
