Fashion today is nothing but translation of period art forms,” says Omar Benitez, head of faculty,Raffles Millennium International,as he along with his team of students put up an exhibition on the theme Le Baroque at the institute’s campus in Sector 25.

Baroque is an exquisite 16th and 17th century artistic monument that defined and lent its name to that era. The theme was decided upon after much speculation as “it’s an era that has much to inspire,” says Benitez. Three interior design students Harleen Kaur,Aanchal Sachdeva and Harjot Kaur Gill and two fashion design students Harleen Kaur and Abhimanu Vig helped put up the show, complete with muted gold paintings, high rise pillars and minimalist hand-made chandeliers. “We wanted to bring parts of the era alive,” says Harleen, who has also designed a free flowing dress in blue with 45 meters of satin. It is a fabric, they tell us,that lives up to the royal feel of the times. “It was used extensively in dressing houses and people. From drapes, curtains to artificial flowers, all were fashioned from these,” she says, adding that the fabric was now seeing a comeback. Models sashayed along the ramp in creations that befit those who reigned back then. “Here different materials and embellishments have been used to revive the spirit of the age,” say the students. Guided by campus director KM Sim and Maija Berzina from Europe,“everything was prepared in five weeks time,” they sum up.
