Vendors and shop owners are using corridors of the market to display their array of goods, causing an inconvenience to shoppers and pedestrians. Shopkeepers have devoured corridors in many markets in the city.
The parking lot in the market in Sector-22 is used by the shop owners, who permanently park their cars and store their goods in it. In fact, the cars have become a display window for their wares.
Rajiv Verma ,a resident of Sector 22 said,The shopkeepers park their cars in the parking area with their stock. This leaves little space for the shoppers to park, who in turn park their vehicles in the residential areas. Residents of market areas are a harassed lot. Vendors have encroached upon the corridors in the markets. In case of a mishap it could lead to lot of damage.
The situation is similar in markets in other sectors. Due to the encroachments, little space remains for the people to walk.
In Sector 17,which is one of the popular shopping hubs,a variety of items can be found being sold in the corridors. This despite the sector being a zero tolerance zone for encroachments.
A retired officer S K Mittal rued that while he has sent written complaints to the civic body to curb the menace no action is being taken.
The Enforcement Committee of the civic body has discussed the issue time and again, but has not been able to take effective action against the encroachers.
An official of the civic body says that while checks are conducted at regular intervals, the vendors come back once the teams of the enforcement wing leave the area.
