Imarat-e-Shariah, headquartered in Patna, has rejected the Waqf amendment legislation, calling for its withdrawal. The legislation was passed by Parliament in April.

The development comes against the backdrop of a renewed push against alleged illegal immigration from Bangladesh. This has included the detention and “pushbacks” into Bangladesh of hundreds of people declared to be foreigners by the state’s Foreigners’ Tribunals.

In a hearing held Friday at the Gauhati High Court, a Bench of Justices Manish Choudhury and Mitali Thakuria directed the counsels for the petitioners to identify specific individuals affected by the state government’s actions.
