Ayurvedic skincare for children: Things parents must keep in mind

According to Shreedha Singh, co-founder of The Ayurveda Co., Ayurvedic Acharyas advise parents to start caring for their children's skin from infancy.

There is no parent who does not want to offer the best to their children–whether it is in terms of their education, health or nutrition. As ancient wisdom, Ayurveda can help parents support their child’s health.

The benefits of Ayurveda extend to the skin as well. Ayurvedic skincare is based on ancient Indian medicine and addresses skin conditions by treating the underlying causes. According to Shreedha Singh, co-founder of The Ayurveda Co., Ayurvedic acharyas advise parents to start caring for their children’s skin from infancy.

Among these Ayurvedic practices, the Ayurvedic tradition of abhyanga or oil massage– holds great significance. “This practice is known for its vatahara properties, which help balance and pacify the vata dosha–closely associated with the nervous system. Regularly massaging the child’s body with particular attention given to areas like the head, ears and feet, is believed to increase the secretion of human growth hormone (HGH) that plays a vital role in normal growth and development. These massages are also said to reduce stress levels and improve sleep — supporting the proper secretion of hormones necessary for healthy growth,” Singh said.

In addition to body massages, Ayurveda emphasises the importance of maintaining cleanliness and practicing appropriate skincare right from birth. “It is recommended to use specifically formulated mild and natural cleansers to keep the child’s skin clean and free from impurities. Furthermore, moisturising the skin with gentle and natural ingredients is encouraged to maintain hydration and nourishment,” Singh explained.

Parents should be mindful of age-appropriate products for their children– understanding that each stage of development requires tailored care, as per Singh. Here is an age-wise list of recommendations:

Infants

During this phase of life, the delicate nature of an infant’s skin demands the utmost care. Ayurveda emphasises the avoidance of products containing harsh chemicals and synthetic additives. Instead, parents are encouraged to opt for samskara shayya (herbal-infused bedding) to provide natural and gentle care for the infant’s skin. Natural cleansers like triphala or herbal decoctions can effectively cleanse the skin without causing any imbalance or irritation.

Additionally, employing Ayurvedic oils such as bala tailam can nourish and moisturise the skin, thereby supporting its healthy development.

Toddlers and young children

As children transition into the toddler stage, Ayurvedic teachings emphasise avoiding products containing artificial fragrances, colours and harsh chemicals that may disturb the innate balance of the skin. Instead, incorporating herbal preparations like ubtan (a mixture of herbs and grains) can serve as a gentle cleanser and exfoliator.

Ayurvedic oils like balaashwagandhadi tailam and lakshadi tailam are recommended for moisturisation due to their natural nourishing properties. These oils help maintain skin hydration, impart a healthy glow and provide protection against environmental stressors.

Moreover, adding dashapushpadi (a combination of ten sacred flowers) in skincare preparations can offer soothing effects on the skin– enhancing its vitality and radiance.

In this age group, Ayurveda advises steering clear of skincare products that contain harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances and artificial additives. Instead, herbal pastes or masks incorporating potent ingredients like chandan (sandalwood), nimba (neem), haridra (turmeric), and dashapushpadi (a combination of ten sacred flowers) can be introduced. These natural ingredients possess cooling, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing properties– promoting optimal skin health and radiance while preserving its integrity.

Singh highlighted that one must bear in mind that skincare routine of kids may vary from that of adults.

*Embrace herbal preparations: Incorporate ubtan— a mixture of herbs and grains as a gentle cleanser and exfoliator to remove impurities and promote healthy skin.
*Nourish with Ayurvedic oils: Moisturise the skin using Ayurvedic oils like lakshadi tailam and Balaashwagandhadi tailam to provide hydration, enhance skin radiance and protect against environmental stressors.

*Avoid harsh chemicals: Steer clear of skincare products that contain harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances and artificial additives as they can disrupt the skin’s natural balance and potentially harm it.
*Minimise synthetic fragrances: Synthetic fragrances can irritate the skin and disturb its natural equilibrium. Opt for products with natural scents or choose fragrance-free options.
*Say no to artificial colours: Products with artificial colours should be avoided as they can adversely affect the skin — particularly for children with sensitive skin.
*Steer clear of harsh exfoliants: Avoid abrasive exfoliants that can damage children’s delicate skin. Opt for gentle exfoliation methods like ubtan to promote skin health without causing harm.
