Putin India Visit Today Live Updates: India 'skill capital of the world': PM Modi at India–Russia Business Forum

At the India–Russia Business Forum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Russia are “moving forward together on a new journey of co-innovation, co-production and co-creation,” adding that the partnership aims not just to boost bilateral trade but to develop “lasting solutions to global challenges.” Inviting businesses to deepen engagement, he said, “Come, Make in India, partner with India, and together let us create for the world.”

Modi said both countries had taken major decisions on tourist visas, which he said would boost two-way tourism, create new business opportunities for tour operators and generate employment.

Highlighting India’s young workforce, he said the country is emerging as the “skill capital of the world,” with talent across technology, engineering, healthcare, construction and logistics. Training Indian workers in Russian language and soft skills, he added, would help create a “Russia-ready workforce” aligned with Moscow’s demographic and economic priorities.

Modi said discussions over the past two days had been “very productive and meaningful,” with all sectors of the India–Russia partnership represented. He emphasised the need to unlock the full potential of connectivity initiatives and welcomed the large Russian delegation accompanying President Putin.

The prime minister said he and Putin had set a target last year to cross USD 100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, but added that after their latest discussions, “we will achieve it earlier.” Work is underway, he said, to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Putin noted that cultural and educational ties were strengthening, and said the launch of the RT news channel in India would help audiences engage more closely with Russian perspectives.

Putin India Visit Today Live Updates: 'We have the right to decide who we meet, without it necessarily being seen as connected to any other relationship,' Congress' Shashi Tharoor on President Putin's visit

On Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "It is a very important gesture, and you must understand that diplomacy is both symbol and substance. The symbolism is an essential part of our foreign policy outreach. When the Prime Minister goes to the airport, when he makes him sit in his own car, when he takes him for a private dinner, when he gifts him the Gita translated into Russian, all these are very significant symbolic gestures. But they are not a substitute for substance. The substance is going on right now behind closed doors. We don't know what's being discussed, but I have no doubt that it's a very important signal of continuity and a very important relationship we've had with Russia for a very long time. This continuity will certainly be apparent when the decisions come out at the conclusion of the visit."

"We have the right to decide for ourselves who we meet, without it necessarily being seen as in any way connected to any other country's relationship. I hope we will maintain good independent relationships with the US, Europe, and China. Why should we have to worry about how people are going to react?" he added. --ANI

Putin India Visit Today Live Updates: 'We plan to move forward in all areas,' Putin to India

During his first bilateral meeting in India since the war in Ukraine began, Russian President Vladmir Putin said Moscow and New Delhi have relations in the military sphere, in space development, artificial intelligence and other areas. "We plan to move forward in all these areas," he added.

Bilateral trade between India and Russia reached a record high of $68.7 billion in FY 2024-25 -- a five-fold increase in four years. However, this arrangement has been lopsided as India’s exports were only $4.9 billion while imports from Russia, mainly oil, amounted to $63.8 billion.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had flagged the trade deficit during his Moscow visit earlier in August, saying that it "needed to be addressed urgently." Putin's visit comes at a time when oil imports from Russia are strained by Western sanctions and Trump's tariffs.

Referring to New Delhi’s energy ties with Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday said “certain actors” dislike India’s growing role in international markets, and that these elements are aiming to constrain India’s influence for political reasons by imposing “artificial obstacles”.

In an interview to a private TV that was released on Thursday evening, the Russian president was asked about Western sanctions against Moscow and the US’s imposition of penalty tariffs on India for importing Russian oil. Putin said that India and Russia’s energy cooperation largely “remains unaffected”.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov on Thursday co-chaired the 22nd meeting of the India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation in New Delhi.

Welcoming the Russian delegation, Rajnath Singh said, “Namaskar to the Defence Minister of Russia, Andrei Belousov, and the Russian delegation. It is a matter of pride for me to host you all here. I thank you for coming to discuss and strengthen our bilateral defence cooperation.”

He underlined the depth of the relationship, calling Russia a “time-tested, special, privileged and strategic partner of India”. Since the 2000 India–Russia Strategic Partnership declaration, he noted, defence cooperation has expanded significantly. Singh added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin have maintained regular engagement, including “extensive interactions” during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in China in June 2025.

Singh also highlighted progress on the economic front, welcoming the successful 26th meeting of the India–Russia Working Group on Trade and Economic Cooperation in Moscow last month, as well as the launch of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement with the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union. “We had eagerly awaited the visit of President Vladimir Putin to India for the 23rd India Annual Summit, and that awaited moment has now arrived,” he said.

Belousov, in his remarks, began with a “Namaste” and expressed appreciation for India’s hospitality. He emphasised the “strong, time-tested friendship” between the two countries, rooted in deep cultural traditions. Marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, he thanked the Indian delegation for attending commemorative events in Moscow earlier this year.

Calling India a “key partner for South Asian stability and global security,” Belousov said Russia continues to work closely with India on modernising the Army, Air Force and Navy. He also extended greetings on National Navy Day.

He noted that the intergovernmental commission reflects the commitment of both sides to taking effective, mutually beneficial decisions. “Today, we review its achievements and set new goals for the future,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit gains added significance at a moment when India–US ties are experiencing visible strain. Washington has recently slapped 50 per cent tariffs on a wide range of Indian exports, along with a separate 25 per cent levy tied to New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian crude. Putin India Visit Today Live Updates: 'India has to utilise the opportunity of the visit of the Russian President,' says West Asia Strategist Waiel Awwad

Putin India Visit Today Live Updates: On Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India, West Asia Strategist Waiel Awwad told news agency ANI, "... Russia is considered by India not only as a strategic partner, but also a faithful one. Over the last seven decades, we have seen that Russian involvement in Indian affairs has always been pro-India... India has to utilise the opportunity of the visit of the Russian President... India also has to present its view of the Ukraine war, which India has already been saying. The Prime Minister said it many times that this is not an era of war and he wanted to end the Russia-Ukraine war. If that message goes well with President Putin, especially when the United States is also using its own influential diplomatic channels to pressurise Putin and Zelenskyy to agree to the peace plan. That will ease the tension on India. India has also noticed that the American tariff has been threatening India, especially in the energy sector, where India has sharply reduced the purchase from Russia, while they are buying from the US. If this war is put to and end, then India will be more comfortable, not only in buying Russian oil, but also to make 'Make in India' more successful..."

The two sides seem to have decided to raise trade to $100 billion by 2030, irrespective of the oil equation... The two would have an occasion to discuss the geopolitics not only of Europe but also among the superpowers: China, Russia, and the United States, as well as the situation in South Asia... "
