Some challenges met,more ahead

2011

HAJI YOUSUF: The National Conference activist died in custody,after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had called him to his residence over alleged corruption charges. The political storm presented the CM his first challenge after a peaceful summer,with the Opposition demanding his resignation,accusing him of being involved. The CM weathered the immediate crisis but the case is pending before the Supreme Court and a commission of inquiry.

AFSPA: The CM said in October that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act would be withdrawn from certain areas within days,putting him in confrontation with the Army. As Omar could not keep his promise,rivals got an opportunity to portray him as weak.

PEACE AND TOURISM: Unlike the previous three summers,that of 2011 passed off peacefully and brought a record number of tourists. After the 2010 failure,the Hurriyat leadership was wary of starting another agitation.

AFZAL GURU: The Assembly failed again to pass a resolution.

2012

SAJADS FORAY: Civic polls are likely in March 2012. Separatist-turned-mainstream leader Sajad Lones Peoples Conference is likely to participate.

UNEASY COALITION: The states future political dispensation will be decided by the relations of coalition partners Congress and National Conference. Another challenge will be the dissent within the NC.

SYED ALI GeeLANI: The Hurriyat hardliner has a lot of support and much depends on how he plays his cards. In the past two years,he has tried to distance himself from violence. Of late,he seems to be moving back towards his Islamist ideology.
