Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju Wednesday asked the media to exercise restraint while reporting on bomb blasts and other terror acts. He argued that certain communal elements are trying to create an impression that all Muslims are terrorists.
His appeal came after Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities,Wajahat Habibullah, sought his intervention pointing out that the media appears to have targeted a particular community in the wake of the Hyderabad blasts.
The commission has noted with concern that even before completion of investigation and on the basis of what appears unfounded conjecture the media appears to have targeted a particular community, which seems unfortunately, also to be reciprocated in statements of some who are in positions of authority, Habibullah wrote to Katju.
Katju agreed with Habibullah. It is unfortunate that in recent years an impression has been sought to be created by certain communal elements that all Muslims are terrorists, and Muslims are often discriminated…as mentioned in the Sachar Committee Report, he said in a statement.
