Under fire, CM seeks CBI inquiry

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced that the CBI will investigate the attack on the office of Tamil daily Dinakaran in Madurai.

Announcing this in the state Assembly, Karunanidhi said since the issue concerned his family members, a probe by the state police would not be sufficient. The Chief Minister said, 8220;As my family is involved in theseviolent incidents, it was decided to hand over the case related to the attack on Dinakaran office and the death of three employees to CBI.8221;

The Chief Secretary would write letters to the Centre and officials concerned on behalf of Tamil Nadu Government seeking a CBI probe, Karunanidhi added. The Chief Minister8217;s announcement comes in the wake of severe criticism of the role of Madurai police during violence allegedly by supporters of his elder son M K Azhagiri against the paper owned by the Maran family which had conducted an opinion poll favouring his younger son M K Stalin as his political successor.

Based on the complaints by Aladiyan, an SI present at the scene of crime, five persons 8212; 8216;Tiger8217; Pandi, Batcha, Saravanan, Mari and Prabu 8212; have been arrested for hurling petrol bombs into the office in which three employees, Gopinath, Vinod and Muthuramalingam died of suffocation.

The accused have been booked under various sections of the IP and other laws. The Tata Sumo which was used in the attack was also seized. The police has also tagged the complaint lodged by Dinakaran News Editor Muthupandian for enquiry.

Moreover, based on complaints given by two head constables, the police has arrested seven more persons for damaging public property, including the husband of city Mayor Thenmozhi. Eighty-two people have been taken into preventive custody, the Chief Minister said.

Security has been provided to all offices of Dinakaran and Sun TV in the state, he said, adding that the situation was under control in the southern districts.
