JANUARY 30: It8217;s the season of superstition. The devastating earthquake in Gujarat has triggered off a spate of rumours and rituals. From Matunga to Chembur to Dombivili, the South Indian community was in ferment. Rumour went that the Tirupati temple board authorities had requested all women to tie the sacred yellow thread to ward off evil, in the aftermath of the earthquake. It was said that the mangalsutra round the goddesses8217;neck had fallen down during the quake and that to appease the goddess it was necessary to perform this ritual.
In the end the rumours were scotched only when a regional TV channel came on the air.
Meena Natarajan of Thakurli says a friend phoned her saying the Dwarka Shankaracharya had asked women to tie the yellow thread.. She in turn informed all her friends.
Laxmi Iswar, a bank employee says she too was flooded with phone calls by several friends, relatives and colleagues. As she was anxious to avoid any further calamity to the nation she acquiesced and tied the thread. 8220;It was only today that we came to know it is nothing but rumours. Someone got in touch with the authorities in Tirupati who strongly denied having issued any such request. Nothing had happened to the idol they said.8221;
So heavy was the demand for the special yellow thread that in several places in Matunga and Kings Circle the stores ran out of thread. Adds Laxmi, quot;My friends told me they had difficulty in procuring the thread. But it was not just the community here in Mumbai that was rocked by such rumours. They were rife in Chennai and even in Pune.quot;
