Somdev Devvarman reached the third round of the qualifying event of the French Open with a straight-set win over Daniel King-Turner of New Zealand on Wednesday.
The sixth seeded Indian won 6-1 6-2 win in an hour and 12 minutes in the second round of the clay court Grand Slams qualifiers. In the third round,Devvarman will take on Frenchman Adrian Mannarino,who beat Ramon Delgado of Paraguay 6-2 7-6 in his second-round match.
It was a dominating performance by the top Indian as he took just 29 minutes to win the first set 6-1,breaking his opponents serve in the fourth and sixth games.
Devvarman then broke his opponent in the first game of the second set to go up 2-0. He got another break of serve in the seventh game to make it 5-2 and then held on to wrap things up. The second set lasted 43 minutes.
Devvarman is the only hope for India in mens singles as Prakash Amritraj had crashed out of the qualifying event with a 4-6 6-2 8-6 loss to Joao Souza of Brazil in the first round.
Bhupathi,Bopanna in QFs
NICE: Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna made the doubles quarter-finals of the ATP 250 event in Nice,France after winning the first round with their respective partners.
Top seeds Bhupathi and Max Miryni of Belarus overcame a late fight from Brit Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr of Australia 6-1 7-5 in their opening round,but the unseeded pair of Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi had to toil hard to beat German Simon Greul and Rogier Wassen of the Netherlands 7-5 6-7 (6) 10-4.
Bhupathi and Mirnyi will next take on the the Italian combine of Andreas Seppi and Potito Starace. Bopanna and Qureshi will play Brits Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski.
