A fire incident was reported from MC’s multistoreyed parking at Mata Rani Chowk at 11.30 am on Saturday morning. However,a major mishap was averted because it was an off day in the corporation and hence no vehicle was standing in the area where the fire broke out. The shed,however,has been reduced to ashes and it took firemen 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

CME on caesarean sections today
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Christian Medical College and Hospital is conducting an ICOG CME under the aegis of NOGSI on Caesarean Sections Recent Trends and Medico Legal issues on the March 14. The speakers from Mumbai and Punjab will speak on issues ranging from newer techniques,upcoming indications,management of complications and medico legal issues commonly associated with Caesarean sections.

LIC employees stage protest
On the call of the North Zone Insurance Employees Association (NZIEA),the employees working in LIC of India registered their protest and opposition against the proposed amendments in Insurance Law and LIC Act,pending in Parliament. Carrying placards and posters,theey formed a human chain rally in front of LIC office near Clock Tower.

British Council launches IELTS scholarship award
The British Council will select eight students from India for the IELTS Scholarship award and each of whom will receive Rs 3,00,000 towards the cost of tuition fees.

This was disclosed by Kevin McLaven,first secretary of Educational services,British High Commission,while addressing a press conference in the city on Saturday. He said,“Eligible candidates will have an IELTS test score. In 2010,we are also launching an award in three other countries with a total investment of around approximately $75000. And award winners will begin a full time post-graduate programme at any overseas university which uses IELTS as a part of its admission requirements and as reliable measure of English language proficiency.”

48 medical graduates get degress at DMCH convocation
As many as 48 medical graduates of 2004 batch of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) were awarded degrees during the annual convocation held on Saturday. Padma Bhushan Dr J S Chopra,former professor at PGIMER was the chief guest on the occasion. Dean Academics,Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina and Principal Dr Daljit Singh read out the annual report of the college and highlighted the achievements and progress made by college. Appreciating the progress made by DMCH,Dr Chopra said that the institute,with its graduate,post-graduate and super-specialty programmes,was one of the most prestigious medical institutions of the state.

3 children injured
Three kids were injured after they came in contact with a high tension wire at Police Lines in Jamalpur on Saturday. The incident took place when the trio — Chandi Ram,Manpreet and Sahil — was playing. According to sources,”Manpreet (10) and Chandi Ram (10) son climbed a tree while Sahil (8) kept watching them. The duo came in contact with high tension wires and fell on Sahil,who was also injured.” The trio has been admitted to the Christian Medical College and Hospital.
