Relieving the pain of the destitute is his sole motto. City industrialist Chander Mohan Khanna has been nursing the sick at the Civil Hospital for the past 18 years.
Nearing his 50s,Khanna said,It was in 1991 when the idea of helping the poor hit me. I asked my friends (a group of 25 people) to contribute Rs 500 per month for buying required medicines for the needy. For 12 years,it was a group effort but later I took upon myself the task of donating medicines to the poor.
A regular visitor to the Civil Hospital for the last 18 years,he makes it a point to meet all the requirements of the underprivileged.
On being asked how he manages time between his business and philanthropic commitments,he said,I finish my work within 3 to 4 hours and then visit the Civil Hospital. But if I get a call from any of the patients or staff from the hospital,I leave my work mid-way and go to attend them.
Khanna also nurses five sick cows at the goshala of Govind Goham. A father of three, Khanna said,I wanted to open medicine banks at different places in the city. The aim was to help people dispose of their unused medicines by putting them in the medicine box which can further be given to the needy. But a few religious organisations, where I wanted to install medicine bank, refused to cooperate so I could install only one medicine bank at Shri Raghunath Hospital in Agar Nagar from where I regularly collect medicines. If any other organisation or person allows me to install medicine banks on their premises,I would be deeply obliged.
Khanna also plans to set up a free pathology lab for the needy patients. I want people to come forward and open a free laboratory at the Civil Hospital. I will render my services to that laboratory as well.
With endless stamina and energy,he beams,I am just a call away for any needy patient at the Civil Hospital.
