Kolkata saw one of the longest human chains formed in recent times,on the second day of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s campaign for the Assembly elections,on Tuesday. Starting sharp at 5 pm from Tala Park in north Kolkata,Banerjee walked till Beleghata Sukanta Mancha. A huge human chain was formed spontaneously by thousands of people, mostly women, who were standing for hours on both sides of the roads to catch a glimpse of Didi.

Banerjee walked through Shyambazar,Vivekananda Road,Maniktolla,Rajabazar,Phoolbagan Crossing and Beleghata CIT Road, which she covered in two and a half hours.

The mood at Rajabazar,Maniktola and Phoolbagan was jubiliant. Owners of small shops and stalls in these areas had closed down their shops to be a part of the human chain. Hundreds of conch shells were being blown as Banerjee passed by,smiling and waving at the eagerly awaiting crowds. People also showered flower petals on her.

The Trinamool chief was flanked by close aide Atin Ghosh and her party’s nominees Mala Saha,Sadhan Pandey,Sashi Panja and Paresh Pal who are contesting from Kashipur-Belgachia,Maniktolla,Shyampukur and Beleghata respectively.

Strictly abiding by the Election Commission guidelines of not using microphones in open spaces till the end of all examinations in the state on April 13,Banerjee did not address any gathering in her roadshow and also raised no slogans.

On April 1,she is scheduled to walk from Beleghata Gandhi Maidan to Park Circus Maidan, covering the rest of north Kolkata. On April 3,she will campaign in constituencies of Gariahat and Golpark and the next day,she will cover areas from Garden Reach to Ekbalpur.
