If you walk into Defence Colony Market, you will find a miniature clone of the restaurant Chilli Seasonss on the street. A food cart, creatively named A La Cart,is selling satays and wraps a stones throw from the mother ship. If the mountain will not come to Mahomet, then Mahomet will go to the mountain. If people are reluctant to come to eateries, the eateries will seek them out. Some of the popular restaurants in town are rolling out food in carts or sprouting cheaper avatars in food courts. In the place of shiny porcelain crockery are Styrofoam plates and plastic bowls, and portions have been downsized to be sold at pocket-friendly rates.
Chef Manav Sharma of Chilli Seasonss says,We wanted to take the cuisine from the restaurant to the streets. Our cart will sell a variety of wraps and satays for those who do not wish to take time out and dine. We will be rolling out similar carts into the malls in south Delhi as well.
Meanwhile,at the MGF Mall in Gurgaon, the food court is buzzing with stunning new entrants. The first counter Hello Sichuan is decked in shades of black and deep blue and promises a Chinese fare with a burst of red peppers. The counter easily manages to replicate the theme of the restaurant Hao Shi Nian Nian a fine diner dressed in similar colours and offering a similar fare. There is minced chicken and carrot buns, salt and pepper shrimps and a variety of stir fries.
Down the line is Oz Xpress that opened a month ago. For owner Daman Sodhi, the food counter not only helps to promote his restaurant Oz but is also a great platform to test new dishes. We rolled out Oz Xpress for those who wanted fine-dining food at affordable rates, says Sodhi. The menu here is surprisingly extensive with wazza chicken, rogan josh and kadi chawal, with some mezze platters, grills and pastas thrown in for variety. We experimented with my moms recipes of Kashmiri and Pakistani dishes and it received a great response at the counter. In a weeks time, well introduce them at Oz restaurant as well, says Sodhi.
