Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, on Wednesday, gave clearance to the loop near AIIMS flyover under Barapullah Phase-II. The loop will cut down travel time between IGI Airport and North and East Delhi and decongest the Ring Road by providing direct connectivity from Dhaula Kuan towards Barapullah elevated road.
Work on this loop can start immediately, as Barapullah Phase-II has already been given all requisite approvals. Phase-II will see extension of the elevated road from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to INA Market.
“The second phase will cost Rs 530 crore, including construction of all loops in this phase. A consultant will be asked to make a detailed drawing of the loop while we initiate geo-technical investigations on site,’’ an official said.
Since this area is already barricaded for Metro construction, Public Works Department (PWD) does not have to barricade the area again. Extension of the elevated road is likely to be completed by October 2015, PWD officials said. “Our target was to complete work, including building the slip roads, by March 2015. However, the actual project may take longer. We just received all relevant clearances from railways for this project but can only start work after monsoons,’’ the official said.
As per the plan, the loop will cut away from the elevated road near the AIIMS flyover. A little before Dilli Haat, the road will turn right, go over Aurobindo Marg and touch down on Barapullah Road, around 300 m after the INA T-point. This move will help in
decongesting South Extension, Moolchand and Ashram.
“At present, anyone travelling from Dhaula Kuan and wanting to get on the Barapullah Elevated Road has to go through Sarojini Nagar, which is a very crowded route. With the construction of the loop, they will be able to travel from Dhaula Kuan and go towards ISBT without any hassle. For this, they will have to exit Barapullah road at Sarai Kale Khan and use the Ring Road bypass flyover towards ISBT,” the official added.
The parking lot constructed by NDMC at Kushak nallah will be partially broken down to allow descent of the elevated road.
Once Phase-III of the Barapullah elevated road, from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar, is completed, it will be possible to travel from Mayur Vihar upto AIIMS in less than 15 minutes.
