Naswadi archers win gold at Ranchi competition
VADODARA: The archers of Naswadi-based Eklavya Archery Academy bagged gold medal at a national archery competition recently held in Ranchi. A team of eight archers participated in the Under-19 All India School Games Competitions- Archery Championship.
The winner Magan Bhil (18) won the gold medal in 30-metre competition. Last year,the Naswadi team had bagged three silver medals. The archers are now gearing up for the All India Senior National Championship which will be held in the month of March. “We have been performing well over the last one year and there is a chance that if we perform our best in the senior national championship,the best of the performers will be picked up for the coming Commonwealth Games,” said Dinesh Bhil,who runs the Eklavya academy.

GPCB team visits proposed power plant site in Kutch
AHMEDABAD: A team of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) visited Bhareshwar in Kutch district on Tuesday where the OPG Power Plant is due to come up.
The GPCB also met a group of agariyas and members of the Machimar Adhikar Sangh Samiti (Trade Union),which had written to the board not to allow any power plants to come up in the area.Bharat Patel from the Machimar Adhikar Sangh Samiti (Trade Union) said: “There are 6,000 fishermen and 5,000 agariyas. Where will they go if the power projects of Adani,Tata,Bharat Forge and Coastal Gujarat Power Limited come up? The fishermen have been here for nearly 300 years.”
Bhikha Ahir,representing the agariyas,said: “There are 12 big saltpans as big as 120 acres,and 30 small ones in Bhadreshwar. Earlier,reports said they don’t exist. We showed the team that the saltpans and the salt have been blackened by pollution.” GPCB Chairman K U Shah said: “We have formed a committee to inquire into the issue. We are yet to take further decisions. Nothing can be said as of now.”

Gulberg massacre: HC turns down plea for naming cops as accused
AHMEDABAD: THE Gujarat High Court on Wednesday upheld the order of the Special Trial Court for the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case not to arraign two policemen till the process of recording the evidence is over. The policemen in question are former Joint Commissioner of Ahmedabad M K Tandon and the then Inspector of Meghaninagar police station,N D Parmar.
Some of the witnesses in the case had moved an application before the trial court to arraign eight people as accused. The six others are Rajesh Jinger,Babu Marwadi,Mahendra Pukhraj,Manish Patel alias Splendor,Jagroopsinh Rajput and Iniyo Harijan. The court had ordered to arraign Jinger and Marwadi,but rejected the application in the case of Pukhraj,Patel and Rajput. Harijan is presumed dead and the court has kept its order open to arraign Tandon and Parmar. One of the witnesses,Imtiaz Khan Pathan,had challenged the order in the HC. The petitioner’s lawyer,M M Tirmizi,has contended that there is enough evidence against the duo to arraign them. Meanwhile,for Pukhraj,Patel and Rajput,the court issued a notice to the Special Investigation Team to file a reply by March 8,the date for the next hearing.

Upper age limit of V-C for tech varsity increased to 70 yrs
AHMEDABAD: The state Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Gujarat Technological University (Amendment) Bill,2010,raising the age of the vice-chancellor of Gujarat Technological University from 65 to 70 years.
Moving the motion for the Bill,Higher Education Minister Ramanlal Vora told the House that the provisions of the Gujarat Technological University Act,2007 provided that a person below 65 years of age be appointed as its vice-chancellor.
However,the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development recently suggested enhancing the age of superannuation of the vice-chancellor from 65 to 70 years.
“With a view to widen the choice and scope of selection of best persons for vice-chancellor,it is considered necessary to enhance the age limit from 65 to 70 years,” said the minister while moving the Bill,which was passed by a voice vote.

Bhuj land scam: CID arrests deputy collectors
RAJKOT: The CID (Crime) on Wednesday arrested deputy collectors J D Joshi and H S Suvera in connection with the Bhuj land scam. In January,the CID had arrested suspended Bhavnagar municipal commissioner Pradeep Sharma for alleged corruption in relocation of the Bhuj Jatha Bandh Bazar. Sources said the agency had called five officials to record statements at the Gandhinagar headquarters.
