Seeking to stop the illegal influx of Basmati amid the ongoing procurement season, the Punjab Mandi Board (PMB) has launched a portal where the rice shellers in Punjab must declare the details of the paddy and Basmati being imported from other states.
Experts said this is good from an environmental point of view as farmers have already started burning their fields to clear stubble before sowing of the next crop. However, they warned that air quality may deteriorate at night because effigies of Ravana are burnt in the evening.

Around 32 per cent area of paddy in Punjab is under long duration varieties which give nearly 85 to 100 mann (34 to 40 quintals) yield per acre.
The subsidy amount would be Rs 100 per quintal and one farmer will be eligible for two quintal seed which means a single farmer can avail subsidy of up to Rs 2,000.
Randhawa assured that the situation would gradually become normal with more coal rakes coming to Punjab to overcome coal shortage.
