The voting for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will take place on Thursday, January 15, 2026. After a four-year-long delay, Mumbaikars will vote to elect their new corporators. The last election took place in 2017.
On December 15, 2025, the State Election Commission (SEC) issued the timeline for the elections across 29 corporations, including the Mumbai civic body. The voting is taking place across 227 wards in Greater Mumbai.
The SEC has declared a public holiday across municipal corporation areas.
Here is a brief guide to the 2026 BMC elections, covering schedules, voter turnout, and candidate details.
BMC is India’s richest and largest civic body. It was established in 1873 and is said to control a budget larger than several small Indian states like Goa, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. This election is pivotal, as it is the first polling after the major split in 2022 in the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
BMC acts as Mumbai’s local-self government, responsible for the city’s daily services. Some of the services include civic infrastructures like the flyovers, bridges, subways, and key link roads. Sewage treatment plants, “pothole-free” Mumbai initiative, and the water supply system also falls under the BMC’s remit.
The BMC elections will be held on January 15, 2026. All polling stations across the city will be open from 7.30am till 5.30 pm. An estimated 1 crore people are expected to vote.
Around 1,700 candidates are standing for this election, where 879 are women and 821 men. More than 28,000 police personnel will be deployed across Mumbai ahead of BMC polls on Thursday.
