Pune, PCMC Election 2026 Voting Live | The big question: Can NCP alliance wrest control of PMC back from BJP?

The multi-corner tussle for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), is mainly between the BJP and the alliance of the two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) factions.

The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) came together ahead of the polls and fielded their candidates, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) went solo.

The United NCP controlled politics in the PMC till 2017, after which the BJP single-handedly wrested power, leading to a contest between the two to prove their supremacy in every election thereafter.

The civic election has gained importance in the current political landscape following the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Each political party, regardless of its alliance, is trying to strengthen its base and gain control of local bodies.

Pune, PCMC Election 2026 Voting Live | Visually challenged voters cast ballots despite absence of Braille instructions

Despite the low turnout till Thursday afternoon, several visually challenged persons ensured that they cast their vote, despite lack of instructions in Braille.

Whether it was 58-year-old visually challenged Sakina Bedi, spokesperson of National Federation of the Blind, or Ravi Wagh, president of Blind Cricket Association, they were able to exercise their franchise.

Visually impaired voters can bring a companion to assist them but with accessibility measures like Braille ballots and EVM markings they are encouraged to vote on their own. EVMs have Braille markings next to voting buttons (numbers that are embossed in Braille next to each candidate button) and accordingly a visually impaired voter can then feel these and press the button that corresponds to the candidate they want to elect.

Pune, PCMC Election 2026 Voting Live | “This election feels disturbing”: Why are Pune’s top artists upset at the polling booths?

They came to the polling booths, carrying their concerns about the Pune city and the hopes that fuel their art. Performers, painters and artists of different hues made their voices heard as the civic polls were held on Thursday.

“I have voted as a responsible Indian citizen. I do so every time. This election feels very disturbing and different. None of the parties seem to have a clear ideology. A candidate who was fighting against a party yesterday is now contesting on their ticket today. Money is being openly distributed. False promises are being made to lure people despite their economic situation. While the real issues of life—unemployment, environment, water, pollution, roads, education, and healthcare—are being ignored, people are being distracted by caste, language, and religion. It feels very confusing,” said actor and director Atul Pethe.

He added that he votes to keep democracy intact. “My strong desire is that democracy should prevail and not be replaced by authoritarianism. I want a free social space for debates, discussions, and dialogue,” he said. Read Full Report

AMIDST enthusiasm, even among the ailing, elderly citizens and physically challenged, and some complaints, voters in Pimpri-Chinchwad turned up to exercise their franchise to elect 126 corporators of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The total turnout was around 58 per cent which was 6 per cent less than 2017 elections, which had recorded 64 per cent turnout. Pimpri-Chinchwad has 17.13 lakh voters.

There were smaller queues in the earlier part of the day but as the day progressed, the queues got lengthened. Pune, PCMC Election 2026 Voting Live | BJP confident of romping home with big win, NCP relies on Ajit Pawar’s charisma

EVEN as the voting process for PCMC poll was completed on Thursday by late evening and the counting process is slated to start at 10 am at eight centres on Friday, the BJP Pimpri-Chinchwad unit is expecting to romp home with a thumping majority. On the other hand, NCP whose aggressive campaigning was led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, is hoping to put up a good fight and is eyeing support from Shiv Sena and independents to enthrone itself in power in PCMC.

In the 2017 elections, BJP had won 78 wards. Otherwise in every election since Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation came into being in 1986, BJP struggled to even reach the double digit mark. In 2017 elections, it changed strategy, imported several NCP leaders and won a brute majority.

Pune PMC Election 2026 Voting Live: 'Totally against hukumshahi, tanashahi', says veteran actor-director Atul Pethe

Veteran director and actor Atul Pethe cast his vote Thursday morning, when it was less crowded.

“Every time, I cast my vote very carefully, and with all responsibility because I think and feel strongly that democracy should prevail I am totally against any hukumshahi or tanashahi. When I say, 'I love India', it means that I love democratic India. I believe in unity in diversity. I feel it is my responsibility as a citizen of India to vote and we do every time,” said Pethe.

He also said that the sociopolitical situation has become “really chaotic”.

“This is very unfortunate. Where are the ideological positions? There should be different ideological positions and they should fight against each other on important issues, of society, such as our educational system, our sanitation and transportation. The condition of the air is going down day and day,” he said.

He expressed his disappointment over candidates shifting their ideological positions. “This election is completely different than other elections. This time it was very confusing. Last time, a person, who was with one party is now absolutely against it. He is under a different flag or another ideology,” he says.

Pethe pointed out that “there was a dilemma in my mind” because a lot of candidates have a background of criminal activity. “That is very worrisome for me. But, still you have to choose. I always say that sometimes there is a bad period but, still, you have to choose because you have to keep your faith in democracy,” he said.
