KL Rahul earlier ground it out first and then serenely switched gears to finish unbeaten on 112 off 92 balls and took India to a score of 284/7 in 50 overs. New Zealand had a vice grip on the Indian innings throughout the middle overs but Rahul ground his way through that period. He put up a partnership of 73 in 88 balls with Ravindra Jadeja after which came a 57-run stand off just 49 balls with Nitish Kumar Reddy. He then had Mohammed Siraj at the other end as he smashed 25 runs in the last 13 balls that he faced.

New Zealand roared back after Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got India off to a good start. Rohit fell on 24 off 38 after which Kohli looked like he was simply going to continue where he left off in Vadodara. However, the dots started piling up after Shubman Gill fell on 56 off 53 balls and soon, the in-form Kohli and Shreyas Iyer both fell for cheap. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have been trying to keep India afloat.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Shubman Gill speaks

India captain, Shubman Gill has this to say at the post-match presentation.

[Reflections on the game] We couldn't pick up any wickets in the middle overs, and if you don't do that with five players inside the circle, it becomes very difficult. We would have lost even with 15-20 runs extra. [On the score of 284] When you have a partnership, the set batter should have gone on. We did get a decent start with the ball, but they batted very well in the middle overs. In the first 10-15 overs that we bowled, the ball was doing well. After that the wicket settled. But we could have been more brave, and taken more chances. [Fielding] Even in the last match we let down a few chances. We are always trying to get better in the field and yes if you don't take your chances, you will be in trouble.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Will Young speaks

New Zealand's Will Young, speaking at the post-match presentation, speaks: [On the win] Hugely satisfying. More satisfying was to get the win and have that partnership with Daryl. [Playing Kuldeep] India have two great spinners, first challenge was against Jadeja but we got in a flow. We got a chance to score and it was very pleasing. We didn't know it was a record chase. We thought 285 was a nice number. It meant that we can soak up the pressure and have India under pressure at different times. [On the partnership] You go through different stages in a partnership. You just have to be honest with your partner, keep communicating, and that what's we managed to do. [On his recent lull in form] I have been working hard. That's cricket, can't always get the runs. We just wanted to win a game in India. I really enjoyed that partnership with Daryl. Nice to play in India, the home of cricket."

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: NEW ZEALAND WIN

New Zealand win the second ODI by seven wickets after Daryl Mitchell hits a strange looking ramp shot that has him tumbling on the ground as the ball flies behind the keeper KL Rahul.

This is now the highest successful chase for New Zealand in India in the One-Day International format. Their previous best was 283 against England at Ahmedabad in 2023.

What an innings from Daryl Mitchell, who ends the day unbeaten on 131 off 117 balls.

New Zealand have managed to level the three-match series 1-1.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: ALMOST A CATCH

Prasidh Krishna almost takes a catch of Mitchell, who's hit a slower ball from the bowler straight back at him just two balls after smashing a maximum. And Krishna gets the fingertips of both his hands on the ball and looks like they were singed! Just that sort of day for India.

New Zealand need just 6 runs to win from three overs now!

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: New Zealand need 24 in 30 balls

Luck is also favouring the New Zealand team. On the final ball of Prasidh Krishna's 8th over, Mitchell opens his body to try and heave the ball over the legside, but the ball just kisses the outside edge of the bat and flies over short third for a boundary.

This is now a 53-run partnership off 43 balls for the 4th wicket.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Finish line in sight for NZ

After a stellar first spell, Harshit Rana has not had the same success. The second ball of 9th over, was a short one that's just outside off at 116kph. And Phillips frees his arms to slap it away on the legside for a boundary.

The Black Caps are currently hitting one ball per over to the ropes before dealing in singles. Very sensible run chase this from them.

New Zealand need 33 runs for victory in 6 overs.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Mitchell holding firm

Siraj bowls his 9th over of the night. Been wicketless so far for him. The highlight of that over was a strange/audacious ramp shot from Mitchell that finds its way to the ropes behind the keeper.

The body language of the Indians now seems a little downcast. If the hosts were thinking that Kuldeep getting rid of Will Young and breaking the partnership with Mitchell would be the start of their comeback into the game, that has not been true so far.

New Zealand need 41 runs in 42 balls. A win for the Black Caps sets up a delightful final game of the ODI series.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Century for Mitchell!

Daryl Mitchell scores his 8th century for New Zealand! A mature innings, with the ton coming in just 96 balls. Gave just one opportunity with a catch that was dropped and was almost run out. But otherwise, a very measured innings where he stitched a superb partnership with Will Young.

New Zealand need just 52 runs now to win at almost a run a ball.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: GONE! A catch taken at last and the stand broken at last

Young has been pushing his luck for a while now and finally, it dissipates. He lunges forward last ball of the 38th over, looking to pull a length delivery. Ends up having to take a low swipe at it, it pops up and falls kindly at midwicket where NKR makes no mistake.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Misfields and a dropped catch! India losing the plot!

How many times have we see Jadeja make a mistake in the field? Well, we have seen it happen twice off consecutive deliveries now, far more than anything he has copped in the last 10 years probaboy. Kuldeep Yadav bowls the 36th over, Young hits him for four off the first and second balls. The second of those is smashed right at Jadeja at backward point. But the bounce was awkward for him and it went right through him and to the boundary. Then a nearly suicidal single but Jadeja's throw from backward point is a bad one. Mitchell then gets too far under the ball while trying to mow it out of the ground. Goes high up in the air and Prasidh runs left from long on. It pops right out of his hands.

New Zealand need 85 to win from 84 balls at the end of that over.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: What the captains said

Shubman Gill: We would actually have preferred to bat first, based on the last few games here. Even yesterday there wasn’t much dew, and the players feel the surface tends to slow down as the innings goes on, so batting first looked the better option. Personally, I felt really good in the last game - the rhythm and fluency were there, and it’s always nice to contribute. Hopefully I can build on that and produce a big one today. The middle overs were crucial for us last time. They got off to a decent start, but the way we pulled things back - especially with the fast bowlers picking up wickets in those overs - made a big difference. It’s not always easy in these conditions, but they mixed up their pace and variations really well. Washington is out of the series, so Nitesh comes in for him.

Michael Bracewell: We’re going to bowl first. It looks like a really good surface, and hopefully the dew comes into play later in the evening, which should make things a bit nicer for batting under lights. The last game was a tight one and I was proud of how the boys fought right till the end. We gave ourselves a chance with a couple of late wickets, and today we’re looking to keep taking wickets through the middle and build that pressure. We’ve got a lot of young players in this side, and playing in front of big crowds and all that noise is a great learning experience for them. It’s different conditions for us here, especially with 40,000 people backing the home side, but it’s a challenge we’re really excited about. We’ve made just the one change - Jaden Lennox comes in to make his debut.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Virat Kohli's purple patch

He is 37 years old and yet, such is his form at the moment that one could argue that India's ODI batting lineup is back to revolving around Virat Kohli, as was the case before the pandemic when he was scoring centuries for fun in ODIs and Tests. What has probably been slightly different about him at the moment compared to those heady pre-pandemic days is probably the fact that Kohli has been almost consistently trying to accelarate early in his innings off late.

Ravindra Jadeja may be the only Indian player whose name could be taken in the same breath as that of Kapil Dev in terms of greatest all-rounders from the country. People who know him closely at Rajkot in Gujarat, the venue for second ODI against New Zealand, aren’t surprised about their Jadeja’s competitive streak and willingness to do what is needed to level up. This will be the fifth men's ODI to be hosted by this venue and India have won just one of the last four. The last game to be played here was the third ODI against Ausralia on September 27, 2023 and the latter won that match by 66 runs.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: NKR or Badoni debut?

With India losing Washington Sundar to a side strain, there will be deliberations over the second all-rounder in the side. Local boy Ravindra Jadeja could be partnered by seam all-rounder Nitish Reddy this afternoon even as India have roped in Delhi's Ayush Badoni. Badoni has had decent runs in the middle-order in recent times, but with a flat track likely on offer, India could opt for a back-up seamer as their sixth bowler for the day.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Rajkot, bat first, bat big?

This will be the fifth ODI in Rajkot since the first in 2013. Interestingly, all four previous ODIs have been won by the team batting first and all of them have racked up scores north of 270, three of which were 300-plus scores. Rajkot's flattened surfaces have been well-documented. So will India look to bat first today, or will the dew equation factor in as well?

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Kohli back as No. 1 ODI batter?

The last time Virat Kohli was at the top of the ODI batting charts, the world was a different place. Back in early 2021, after a full year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kohli began to lose his grip over his beloved format. After four successive years at the top, Kohli was dethroned by Pakistan's Babar Azam who, after his scintillating four-year run in the format, lost the top spot to Rohit Sharma last year. Kohli's return co-incides with his own rekindling in the format. More ruthless and aggressive up front and as efficient as ever.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE Score: Welcome!

The ODI circuit is suddenly feeling a lot like the second half of the previous decade. It is Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Virat and Rohit, or Virat/Rohit. The duo have been together or in parts involved in all of the last 10 100-run partnerships India have had in ODIs. Rohit finished 2025 as the No. 1 batter. Now, Kohli is back up and running, closing in on clinching the top spot for the first time in four years. Five successive fifties, including two centuries have helped. A Rajkot belter can just be a catalyst for more this afternoon!

How Ravindra Jadeja continues to beat the idea of time

Ever since that 2018 English summer where he rediscovered his defensive technique, Ravindra Jadeja has been a Test match titan. But that transformation came with a cost: his white-ball fluency seemed to fade, allowing Axar Patel to leapfrog him in the national rankings. Though he is currently playing the New Zealand ODIs primarily to shield a resting Axar, it’s too early to write Jadeja’s one-day obituary. As the series moves to his home turf in Rajkot, those who know him best aren't worried. They know "Bapu" thrives on competition and possesses a unique gear that he can shift into whenever he needs to reclaim his territory. READ MORE from Devendra Pandey
