July 7: Ex-deputy municipal commissioner, G R Khairnar8217;s, first day at the office after spending more than two years away from it, proved to be rather short-lived today. He was refused permission by his boss, Municipal Commissioner Girish Gokhale, to resume duties. He was told it was 8220;not obligatory on the BMC to reinstate him with immediate effect.8221;
Khairnar had gone to meet Gokhale in the morning seeking reinstatement as the deputy municipal commissioner following the Bombay High Court order passed on Friday last.
However, two years of unemployment seem to have taught Khairnar to take such disappointments in his stride. Minutes after his meeting with the commissioner, he was trying to organise a press conference at the Press Room. When he was refused permission once again, he walked across the street to the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, where he told the mediapersons about his intention to file a contempt petition against the BMC. He said stopping him from resuming duties amounted to contempt of court. Khairnar has already threatened to move the court against the part of judgment which upheld the commissioner8217;s decisions to stop his increments.
However, Gokhale said the BMC will be soon challenging Khairnar8217;s reinstatement. 8220;The BMC is yet to obtain a certified copy of the order, and once we get it, we will file an appeal straight away. He can neither be allowed to resume duties before that and nor does it amount to contempt of court,8221; Gokhale said.
The atmosphere at the BMC headquarters today was charged with excitement as the news of the controversial and firebrand Khairnar resuming duties spread. Khairnar, accompanied by his security personnel, arrived at the building at about 10.30 am in a taxi and was greeted by a huge crowd which included BMC security and several officials.
