Men fourth, women finish fifth
SINGAPORE: Indian men struggled against Canada to cling to fourth spot while the women’s team came in fifth among 14 nations competing in the final round of team events at the 14th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. The women’s team reached fifth after beating Canada 4-1 in their last match, improving by one place over last year. The men’s team beat Australia 4-1. But it was overwhelmed 0-4 soon after by Canada.

Bikram, Tricia take honours
CHENNAI: Bikram Uberoi won $ 250 and the India Cements Asian Junior squash circuit invitation tournament at the ICSA courts on Sunday. He beat Yan Ka Ho (Hong Kong) 9-5 9-2 9-0. In an all-Malaysian girls’ final, Tricia Chuah scored a 9-0, 9-2, 9-4 win over Cheryl David.

CALCUTTA: Top seed Leander Paes will take on Dmitri Tomashevich of Uzbekistan in the opening round of the ATP Challenger tennis tournament beginning on Monday. Paes’ match is on Tuesday. Prahlad Srinath, Vishaal Uppal, Mustafa Ghouse and Syed Fazaluddin received wild cards.
Vijayan floors Biju to claim gold
PUNE: AC Vijayan of Army Green floored Biju of Indian Air Force in the first round to bag the gold medal in the super heavyweight class of the 49th Senior Inter-Services boxing championship.
