Op clean-up: BMC pulls down 23,000 posters in a month

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations drive to rid the city of banners and political hoardings has seen the removal of as many as 23,000 posters in nearly a months time. The BMC initiated the drive soon after Prithviraj Chavan took over as the Chief Minister. So far in December over 7,000 banners and hoardings have been removed, said D S Kharat,Licence Superintendent,BMC.

The removal of banners and political hoardings has never been done so intensively before, said a BMC official. In a city plagued by illegal,huge and ugly political posters and hoardings,the initiative by the CM has empowered us to do our duty fearlessly though parties put pressure on us not to remove banners and hoardings, said the official.

Soon after taking office,Chavan had ordered the removal of posters celebrating his appointment. He emphasised that putting up posters and banners at public places was not the appropriate way for party workers to express their feelings. According to an official,Of the unauthorised posters and banners which have been removed,over 90 per cent are those of political parties. The rest are company advertisements. Civic officials however feel that as the municipal elections draw near it will be tough to out checks on hoardings.

The civic administration is hoping that some state level directive or circular against these unauthorised hoardings and banners is released. Just penalising defaulters will not help, said the official. Usually not many follow procedures to put up posters, said an official.
