Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the new development plan for Mumbai has provisions for more open spaces, lending a healthy and environment friendly landscape to the commercial capital of India.
The draft proposal for Mumbai Development Plan (2014-34) has earmarked 3,000 hectares of the no development zone (NDZ) for affordable housing and amenity policy.
It reserves 25 per cent of the land for open space, 8 per cent for social amenities, 8 per cent for institutions, 36 per cent for affordable houses and 34 per cent for private development.
The BMC has invited suggestions and objections on the draft proposal. The final proposal will be formulated by a committee including representatives of all parties.
While indicating that the government would ensure transparency in the process, Fadnavis said, “The government will not like to interfere in the working of the BMC.”
However, when the plan is ready and if there are some shortcomings, it would be noted along with corrective measures, he said.

“The new development plan for Mumbai is definitely going to have more open spaces compared with the last plan. Whether it is provisions for public gardens or recreational grounds, all aspects have been adequately incorporated,” the chief minister said.
Care would be taken to ensure there is no commercial exploitation of recreational grounds, he added.
Fadnavis also emphasised on affordable houses complete with civic amenities. “A lot of apprehensions have been aired over provisions for housing and open spaces , but they are a result of wrong information, which is not based on facts.”
The civic body has suggested building one million affordable houses, for which no development zones, salt pans, Mumbai Port Trust land and Mhada land will be availed. It also proposes integrated amenities to promote better infrastructure.
