Re-schedule panchayat polls in

The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that dates for panchayat elections should be extended in flood affected districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that dates for panchayat elections should be extended in flood affected districts of Uttar Pradesh. The party’s state spokesperson Hriday Narain Dixit said the floods have affected over one lakh people in the state.

He said that at a time when rehabilitation is a primary concern,flood-hit people will find it difficult to file nominations or go for voting.

Dixit said it will be unfair to hold polls in villages at a time when 400 people have already died in the floods and many others have been displaced from their homes. The party has demanded that election commission should conduct an independent survey of the flood-hit villages and blocks and assess the situation. Dixit said election dates should be extended in those villages where people have not returned yet.

The party has also demanded that the election commission should review the law and order situation before the elections. Dixit said violence was reported from all over the state during filing of nominations. He said the commission should ensure peaceful and fair elections.
