Chaos prevailed at Haldaur market of Bijnore district after a group of lawyers, led by the president of the Revenue Board Bar Association, entered into a clash with police on Thursday night.

The clash had followed an altercation between the Association president Puran Singh and a sub-inspector (S-I),K Prasad. While the S-I suffered critical injuries and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meerut,Singh, too, sustained injuries and was admitted at the Bijnor district hospital.

The Bijnore Superintendent of Police (SP),Raj Kumar, said the police are trying to effect a compromise with lawyers. The PAC and the police have been deployed in Haldaur to maintain peace,he said.

The Station Officer (SO) of Haldaur,Rajiv Kumar Saxena, said the medico-legal report of Prasad has been received. Singh’s X-Ray report is awaited. They are also waiting for formal complaints from Prasad and Singh.

Saxena said the incident took place late on Thursday night, when Singh was busy shopping at the Haldaur market. The S-I asked him to park his vehicle at the designated place, which led to a heated exchange and Singh slapped Prasad.

Prasad then summoned the police force and Singh called up the lawyers. But the lawyers reached the spot before the police and attacked Prasad, who sustained serious head injuries.

Thereafter, the lawyers and the policemen engaged in brickbatting, leading to chaos. The clash continued for over half-an-hour and senior officers had to turn up with additional force. The lawyers dispersed only after a lathicharge.
