A day after a 70-year-old man was found murdered in his Southeast Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar residence, police have arrested five persons, all working as domestic help,in the case. Robbery was the motive behind the murder, police said.

The accused, identified as Navraj (19),Harish Bahadur Khadait (19),Ranga Khadka (22),Padam Bahadur Khadka (22) and Kamal Bahadur Budha (23),all natives of Nepal who working in the same locality as domestic help, cleaners and security guards, allegedly hatched a plan to rob Vijay Sareen,a property consultant.

The incident was reported on Saturday afternoon around 1 pm. Sareen lived alone on the ground floor of the house. His body was bound and gagged and the house was ransacked, police said.

“The domestic help,Harish, who reportedly had an argument with Sareen on Friday, was also found to be missing from the house. Further investigation revealed that Sarin had appointed a domestic help from Nepal and did not get the antecedents of the help verified from the police station. Some jewellery items, cash and a mobile phone were also found to be missing,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ajay Chawdhary said. “Police teams collected details of people from Nepal working in the surrounding areas and over 60 Nepalis were examined by the teams. A team was also sent to Rohini, where Sareen’s domestic help lived. Harish and his brother-in-law,Ranga were arrested before they could flee to Nepal,” he said.

During questioning,Harish and Ranga confessed to the crime and told police about the involvement of three others in the case. “They disclosed that Navraj,Padam and Kamal were planning to leave for Nepal from Anand Vihar ISBT. A team was sent to nab the accused and they were apprehended before they boarded a bus to leave the capital,” Chawdhary said.

It was found that this gang of cleaners, domestic help and security guards had been working in the area for some time and often discussed the wealth of their respective employers. This time they planned to target Sareen, who lived alone in his three-bedroom apartment. “They brought ropes and brown duct tape to bind and gag Sareen. Harish knocked at the door and the moment Sareen opened it,the other four gang members waiting outside barged in and tied up Sareen before ransacking the house,” police said.

A case has been registered against the accused and further investigation is on.
