Brawls,gamblers,fires keep cops,firemen busy

There was a group clash in Ram Darbar on Friday night and the police arrested 13 people for indulging in a brawl and creating ruckus.

There was a group clash in Ram Darbar on Friday night and the police arrested 13 people for indulging in a brawl and creating ruckus. The police control room received a call around 9 pm that a clash between groups has turned violent.

It all started when a cracker landed in a house in Ram Darbar and the affected party confronted the other party for being careless. A heated exchange of words ensued following which both the parties formed groups and turned violent. They brought sticks and batons and attacked each other.

The police reached the spot following which some of the accused ran away. They were also pelting stones at each other.

The arrested were produced before the SDM court,which remanded them in judicial custody.

10 held for gambling
Tightening their grip around those found gambling at public places,the police arrested 10 persons last night under the Gambling Act. The police arrested Jagdish,a resident of Mauli Jagran,and Monu,a resident of Sector 56,Chandigarh,from near Grain Mkt Sector-26 and recovered Rs 3,965 from their possession. Ashok Kumar,a resident of Bapu Dham Colony was arrested and cash amounting to Rs 5,515 recovered from his possession. Besides,the police arrested Sonu,a Sector 29 resident; Ashok Kumar of Sector-56; Sajjan of Sector-26; and Sonu of Sector-26 and recovered cash Rs 11,101 from their possession. The police also arrested Shan Mohammad,Ashok Kumar,a resident of Sector-56. The total amount of money recovered was approximately Rs 25,000.

Fire brigade flooded with calls too
The city’s fire department remained on its toes on Diwali night with 17 incidents of fire being reported in all. A minor fire was reported in residential area in Panjab University,which was controlled well in time. Two fire incidents were reported in Industrial Area plots after crackers fell on grass. Another fire was reported at the rear side of Manchanda Book Store in Sector 19 following a cracker burst. Besides,fire was also reported in various other places including houses in Kajheri,Kishangarh,Hallomajra and Pulsora. Calls started at 6.30 pm and lasted till late in the night. While there were minor losses of property,no major loss was reported. “Most of the fire incidents were reported after burning crackers fell on grass or on terraces. No major loss of property or damage was reported even as we kept on receiving calls throughout the night,” said a fire official.
