On Sunday, the state’s disaster management authority reported nine more deaths, taking up the total death toll this year to 71.
More than 37,17,800 people have been affected due to floods in 4,462 villages across 30 districts of the state, news agency PTI quoted an ASDMA official as saying.
A release from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that in the past 24 hours, floods and landslides claimed eight more lives, taking up the total death toll this year to 62.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 18 lakh have been affected in 2,893 villages across 28 districts of the state. Several rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Assam, including Brahmaputra, Beki, Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari and Jiya Bhoroli.
While violent protests have been reported from other states in the past two days, Assam has not witnessed any major protest, barring one in Jorhat on Friday morning.
While four labourers died in a landslide triggered by torrential showers in the capital Guwahati’s Boragaon area early Tuesday, approximately 8,000 people in seven other districts of Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Nalbari, and South Salmara were affected.
The incident happened at around 1 am in the morning, said an official from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
At a press conference, he claimed that while the Assam government procured PPE kits for Rs 600 a piece from other companies, Sarma gave urgent supply orders to the firms of his wife and son's business partners for Rs 990 a piece "taking advantage of the Covid-19 emergency".
Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the CM's wife, refuted the allegations saying did not make a “single penny” out of the supply.
