FOUR MANUAL boats overturned during a boat race at Dumas in Surat on Sunday owing to high-speed winds. No casualties were reported and all those on board were safely rescued, officials said on Monday.
A total of ten boats participated in the competition organised by the National Fighter Club of the coastal area in Surat. It has been held every year for the past 50 years, under Mahajan Samarak Samudra Hodi Spardha (Mahajan Memorial Sea boat competition).
A total of 10 participants competed in the manual boat race, which started at Hazira jetty and ended at Magdalla port, covering a distance of 21 km.
As many as 50 other boats also sailed with them to cheer them on and attend to emergencies.
The four boats overturned at different locations and rescue teams sprung into action. Each boat comprises eight persons tasked with different duties, said a person associated with the competition.
