US President Donald Trump’s claim to seek control over the territory of Greenland has complicated matters in the Arctic region. (File Photo/AP) US President Donald Trump has linked his aggressive push to acquire Greenland to last year’s decision on the Nobel committee to not award him the Nobel Peace Prize, as the Republican leader told Norway’s prime minister that he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely of Peace,” two European officials reportedly said on Monday.
The text message which Trump sent to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store stated, “Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” New York Times reported.
The message by Trump to Norway’s prime minister appears to soar up deadlock between Washington and its closest allies over his threats to acquire Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of NATO member Denmark.
At least eight European countries, including the UK, France and Germany, which sent military to Greenland last week, are facing 10% tariff threat by Trump administration starting from February onwards for opposing the US take over of the territory. The US president has said that the tariff levies would increase to 25% from June 1 if a resolution to the island’s territory is not finalised.
Trump also questioned Denmark’s claim over Greenland in the message to Norway leader and said, “There are no written documents. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you!”
The eight European countries issued a joint statement on Sunday against the tariffs and warned of a “dangerous downward spiral” if this action goes ahead.
“We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process begun last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that we stand firmly behind. Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral,” the group said.
Message from Norway PM Støre to Trump on January 18 at 3:48pm (local time)
Dear Mr President, dear Donald – on the contact across the Atlantic – on Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine – and your tariff announcement yesterday.
You know our position on these issues. But we believe we all should work to take this down and de-escalate – so much is happening around us where we need to stand together.
We are proposing a call with you later today – with both of us or separately – give us a hint of what you prefer!
Best – Alex and Jonas

Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.
Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States.
The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT
