A 25-year-old youth was allegedly beaten to death after he made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the Dabwali-based Nai Disha Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre on Sunday.
Tension prevailed at the centre on Monday morning as the news of the death of Kanwal,a resident of Chautala village who had been undergoing treatment for over four months, spread. Eyewitnesses said on Monday morning, more than 50 irate addicts, who were undergoing treatment at the centre, broke open the doors and tried to manhandle the officials, who ran for their lives.
They levelled serious allegations against the employees of the centre, which is being run by an NGO that charges Rs 4,000 per month for treatment. Police have registered a case against the centres in-charge,Balwant,though he is yet to be arrested.
Kanwal reportedly ran away from the centre on Sunday morning, but was brought back by officials later in the day. As punishment,he was brutally beaten up.
In his complaint to the police, the deceased youths uncle,Pawan, alleged that Kanwal died due to ill treatment. He said when he reached the centre on Monday morning, there was froth around Kanwals mouth and injury marks on his ears and some other body parts.
The centres officials did not return calls made by The Indian Express. There was no news till late in the evening on the whereabouts of the rest of the inmates who fled from the centre on Monday morning. The crowd gathered around the centre said they were complaining about being kept in overcrowded rooms, being made to walk barefeet in winter and to stand for hours with heavy objects, like gas cylinders,on their heads. They claimed to have been routinely beaten up. Sirsa SP Subhash Yadav said the cause of death had not been ascertained as yet. We will receive the post-mortem report tomorrow, he said, adding that there was no apparent injury on the body of the deceased.
