Man murdered over interfaith relationship; police search for woman’s brother

A 34-year-old man, who was in a relationship with a 30-year-old woman of another faith, was murdered with a sharp weapon. Police have launched a search for the woman’s brother and his accomplice, who allegedly attacked him.

Police identified the deceased as Javed Khwajamiyan Pathan (34), a native of Bhokar in Nanded district, who worked at an automobile servicing centre. A search has been launched for the main suspect, the woman’s brother identified as Sandeep Bhurke (25), who works as a security guard, and his accomplice, who is yet to be identified. Police said Pathan was in a relationship with Bhurke’s sister. Bhurke was against the relationship.

The incident took place around 6.45 pm on Monday and an FIR was registered on Tuesday at Ambegaon police station by Raud Usman Shaikh (35), a relative of Pathan. Shaikh and Pathan worked at an automobile service centre at Gaimukh Chowk in Ambegaon. Bhurke and his accomplice came to the service centre and hurled abuses at Pathan before they thrashed and attacked him with a sharp weapon, police said.

DCP (Zone 2) Milind Mohite said, “Initial probe suggests the deceased was in a relationship with the accused’s sister. The deceased and the woman were living together in Narhe area for a few days. The accused was against the relationship.”

An officer from Ambegaon police station said several search teams have been formed. Police said Pathan lived in Pune till 10 months ago before going to Bhokar. He had returned to Pune with the woman less than two weeks ago.
